I was selected to be on one of the first
public art design teams in the country, in 1977, to work on the
Creston Nelson Substation for City Light in Seattle. Since then,
I have worked on at least 25 public art projects, with budgets ranging
from zero to over four hundred thousand dollars. I have worked on
jails and stadiums, schools and libraries, rapid transit stations
and retail stores, street corners and senior centers, parks and
convention centers.
I have made pieces that are strictly sculptural and others that
are very functional - benches and fences, railings and gates, as
well as wall pieces, freestanding sculptures and parts of buildings.
My work in metal is durable and vandal reistant, tough and long-lasting.
Often but not always, I incorporate text or images that are derived
from the site and its surrounding neighborhood. I have worked with
professionals of all sorts - architects, designers, engineers, contractors,
administrators, as well as with the useres of a wide range of facilities
- librarians to correctional officers. I am familiar with all phases
of design, construction and installation and maintain a large studio
where I farbricate most of my own work.
