Railroad Avenue Benches 2002
Bellingham, Washington

A suite of 6 designs - High Chair, Bench, Chaise Lounge, Love Seat, Coffee Table and Stool, I collaborated with architect Anthony Cava on the design of these pieces.

They are arranged in different combinations, like little outdoor urban livingrooms, on four street corners along Railroad Avenue in downtown Bellingham.

Slinky, sinuous curves of stainless steel, ghosts of classic furniture designs from the past, sculptural and functional.

They are used by people for different things at all times of the day and night - sometimes little shrines are set up on the tables, displays of merchandise at the Saturday Farmers Market, midnight trysts outside the nightclub, watching the world go by on Sunday afternoons.

Handbent from electropolished stainless steel, they let the winter rain drain right through, don't heat up in the summer sun and make a nice sound when you drag a stick across them.

Commissioned by The City of Bellingham.
