Literate Fence

1993

Los Angeles Public Library, Los Angeles California

This piece contains quotations about books and knowledge selected by the artist and librarians and is inscribed in 9 languages frequently spoken in the Los Angeles area. It draws upon design motifs from the original 1927 building, as well as the new addition.

The Literate Fence is 100 feet long and 9 feet tall. It connects the 1927 Bertram Goodhue designed Los Angeles Central Library with the 1993 addition by Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer. In addition, there are 5 pairs of gates and 4 window grilles looking into the historic Children's Courtyard.

A 1% for the Arts Commission from the City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Public Library, this project was finished in October, 1993.

Commissioned by the Los Angeles Public Library.
