Safeco Field

1998

Mariners Baseball Stadium, Seattle Washington

I was commissioned to create a series of artworks integrated into the fences and gates of Safeco Field, the home of the Seattle Mariners.

I chose to work with imaginary historical ballplayers- because I think the uniforms look better- I cant stand doubleknits, myself.

These life size figures are water jet cut from stainless steel and welded into the gates in a dozen places around the stadium.

Commissioned by the Safeco Field Public Facilities District

At the northwest entry to the stadium, 10 players are arranged with a batter hitting a ball which arcs above the sign and is caught by an outfielder.

Along the railroad tracks on the north east corner, a solitary batter hits 5 balls, each represented by a curving arc of pipe. At the end of each is a plaque describing the hit.
5 catchers are built into the gates as you enter from the parking garage at the south east corner.
8 pitchers are welded into the gates along Royal Brougham Boulevard, on the north side of the stadium.
