Located at the intersection
of Alma and Alamden near downtown San Jose, this stainless steel
column sits in a traffic island, visible from a distance down
both busy streets.
14 feet tall and 6 feet in diameter,
it is made from welded and forged stainless steel. It features
native plants from the nearby bay, including Tule and other
grasses used by the native peoples for baskets.
It says, "We live here,"
in English, Spanish and the language of the Native Americans
who lived in the area. A simple statement of ownership to speeding
commuters, proclaiming the often forgotten residential character
of the neighborhood.
Commissioned by the City of
San Jose.
